Description historique:
Created c.1682, this original etching is from the XX State of XX. Signed in the plate, 'A Ostade' in the lower left, this work is printed on a fine laid paper. There are two collector's marks on the reverse, in the lower right is the 'H Füssli & Cie' stamp (Lugt 1008) and in the lower left is the 'Graphische Sammlung' (Lugt 1615) stamp for the Cabinet des Estampes, Munich. It is in wonderful condition for a work of its age.

Depicting a group of musicians and onlookers, this work is a classic genre narrative scene of Dutch life in the 17th Century. It is amazing to see such a wealth of detail in such a small work, mesmerizing our eyes through each etched line and tiny crevice filling up the minute space.

We can only imagine the tune these musicians are playing in this scene of Dutch daily life. With a flute player and tambour, the small band gathers in front of a building where onlookers gaze at the sight of the musicians. Presenting the image like a window opening onto a stage, the scene plays out in front of us without the characters showing the slightest acknowledgement of anyone else looking on. The building this group is gathered near has an open door and window which sits below an overhang that contains a wealth of detailed shading. In the Dutch doorway, two figures emerge with one leaning on the door and the other peering out behind him, appearing to be lost in the melody. The vertical wood panels of the building are simple and reflect the modest lifestyle of these people at the time. Giving us a glimpse into a period several centuries ago, the fresh dark tone of the work makes it amazing that this image has withstood the test of time.

About the Framing:
Conservation framed with archival materials and museum quality, this work is float mounted on archival cream linen in an ornate dark wood and painted frame. The intricacy of the moulding compliments the old master style and etched lines of this work. The dark tone of the moulding with accents of red, ochre and black compliments the strong contrasting tones of this work. La biographie de Adriaen van Ostade

Adriaen van OstadeAdriaen van Ostade (1610 - 1685)

Adriaen Van Ostade was a Dutch genre painter and etcher. The eldest son of Jan Hendricx Ostade, a weaver from the town of Ostade near Eindhoven, Adriaen van Ostade was born in Haarlem on December 10, 1610. Although Adriaen and his brother Isaak were born in Haarlem, they adopted the name "van Ostade" as painters. Van Ostade studied under Frans Hals in 1627 and was very influenced by fellow student Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638). In 1634, he joined the Lukas Guild in Haarlem of which he was later the head in 1647, 1661, and 1662. He typically depicted scenes of peasant life: tavern brawls, village fairs, and country quarters. Occasionally, van Ostade painted Biblical subjects, portraits, and landscapes. Later in his career, he adopted a warmer palette and deeper chiaroscuro (high contrast) effects after the style of Harmensz van Rijn Rembrandt (1606-1669). He died in 1685, a well-known artist of his time.
