Historical Description

A wonderfully detailed and charismatic portrait, this exquisite work illustrates the technical mastery and artistic vision of Van Dyck. Cornelius Sachtleven's stately yet approachable expression reflects Van Dyck's refined ability to comfort and relax his subjects, resulting in a realistic and acute portrait. Born into a family of artists, Sachtleven was destined to become an artist himself. He was renowned as a painter of various subjects from rural genre scenes to portraits to biblical and mythological themes. He is well known for his potent images of hell, which some consider his most major contribution to Dutch painting. However, he was also skilled at painting animals, often portraying them as active characters with a hidden allegorical role. Perhaps this explains Van Dyck's inclusion of an unsual animal in Sachtleven's portrait. Sachtleven appears as a sly if not somewhat unusual character, with an ever so slight smirk, casually resting his arm upon an unidentified animal companion.

This portrait is a Mauquoy-Hendrickx State III (of V) before the Giles Hendrickx edition, engraved by Lucas Vorsterman (Zaltbommel, 1595 - Antwerp, 1675) in collaboration with Anthony van Dyck (Antwerp, 1559 - London, 1641) as part of his Iconographie series of engraved portraits of famous people at the time. The plate has been marked in the lower left of the plate "Ant. van Dyck pinxcit" and beneath that "Vorsterman fculp" and in the lower right of the plate "Cum privilegio. Beneath the engraved portrait is the inscription: CORNELIVS SACHTLEVEN | HOLLANDVS PICTOR NOCTIVM PHANTASMATVM.
