Historical Description

Utilizing cool shades of grays, blues, and greens, Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) depicts the calm before the storm. A peaceful rowboat rests on the shore beneath a cloudy, overcast sky. Braque utilizes line and shadow to add depth to the piece, creating a distinct shoreline as the foreground and a quiet ocean as the background. He places the boat as the focal point of the composition in the front and center, with a tall, vertical mast towering up towards the sky. Although the world appears quiet and still, this work conveys a sense of foreboding, for dark clouds warn that a storm approaches.

Created in 1950, this color collotype was based on an original painting by Georges Braque and made collaboratively by Georges Braque and Guy Spitzer. This work is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and also signed in the stone in brown in the lower left of the image. Printed by Guy Spitzer with the Guy Spitzer blindstamp in the lower left of the image.
