Historical Description

Miró was a fascinating artist who constantly strove to challenge the conventions of the art world and in this composition he challenges what it means to represent himself in his art. An eye and his name is all that appears on the canvas blocked out in thick black strokes with his signature yellow, green, red, and blue coloring, but the meaning is simple and powerful. In drawing his name boldly, he identifies himself as Miró and recognizes that there is no other artist out there like him. In portraying the eye, which is the window to the soul and one of the most valuable tools an artist can have, he is recognizing that his art is his soul. A wonderfully rich work, this piece wonderfully complements Miró’s artistry and inner depth.

Created in 1978, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the upper right and numbered from the edition of 99 in pencil in the lower left.
