Historical Description

Utilizing the simplistic design motifs frequently found in his ceramics, Picasso creates an exquisite dish that plays with our notion of what is functional and what is art. In the fun Pablo Picasso ceramic Geometric Face, 1956 A.R. 344, we are greeted by an abstract face. Rigid lines, half squares, raised dots, and waves all jump out from the plate to create a face framed by motifs that complement the shape of plate.  The eyes are crescent moon shapes that are placed opposite one another, creating a gentle curve that is mirrored by the 'S' shape of the mouth. The eyes wink at us, accompanied by a mischievous smile. The face comes to a central point with the three-dimensional pyramidal nose that contrasts sharply with the sloping lines of the eyes and mouth. The overlay of shapes creates an interesting visual, that although may seem unbalanced, still maintains elements of harmony. Dynamic in design, this remarkable work speaks to Picasso's creativity. Picasso is always looking for new ways in which to break down the human face to its simplest components and then inventively recreate it. This innovation truly shines through in Picasso ceramic Geometric Face, 1956 A.R. 344.

Created in 1956, this round dish of white earthenware clay is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
