Historical Description

Rembrandt Nude Man Seated and Another Standing, with a Woman and Baby in the Background ('Het Rolwagentje'), c. 1646 is a fantastic figural study observed by Rembrandt as he includes a variety of characters in this composition to create a pleasant and charming scene.  First, the mother and child in the background are depicted interacting with one another in playful modes of gesture.  They are highly detailed and great care has been taken to portray these characters as highly animated and full of life.  The ideas surrounded teaching a child to walk was a common metaphor in the 17th century for learning or practicing in general; this scene paired with the two figural studies in the foreground suggest that Rembrandt emphasized constant practice in mastering one’s art.  The two primary figures in the foreground have been meticulously shaded and detailed and are considered to be two different versions of the same model, depicted twice in this work.

Created c. 1646, this etching is, according to the New Hollstein Dutch, a State IIIV (of VIII), a Nowell-Usticke State VII (of VII); Boon & White State III (of III); Hind State III (of III); Bjorklund State III (of IV).
